Samuel "Sam" Albert Hughes

Samuel “Sam” Albert Hughes, 86, of Spencer, Virginia passed away Thursday, January 20, 2022 at Stanleytown Health and rehab. He was born November 29, 1935 in Patrick County, Virginia to the late Samuel Grant Hughes and Eva Edna Light Hughes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Rachel Conner Hughes; his second wife, Aileen Johnston Hughes; brother, Maynard E. Hughes. Sam was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church. He attended Valley Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church for the past 20 years. He was a graduate of Stuart High School. He had been employed by American Furniture Co. for over 30 years, where he was affectionately known as “Hardhat”. Samuel is survived by his daughter, Patricia Gail Hughes Belton (Ricky); sons, Michael W. Hughes (Sherri), and Barry D. Hughes (Penny Farmer); sisters, Verna Johnston, Phyllis Thacker (Ronnie), Judy Morrison (Coy); grandchildren, Tiffany Jones, , Emily Krause, Michael Hughes, Jr., Lindsey Harding, Scott Hughes, Ashley Reynolds, Patrick Belton; and thirteen great grandchildren. A graveside service will be held Monday January 24, 2022 at 2:00 PM at Hughes Family Cemetery, 741 Trot Valley Road, Stuart, VA with Pastor Jody Pollard officiating. There will not be a visitation or chapel service due to COVID-19 concerns. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Sam may be made to Valley Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church, 201 Breckenridge Circle, Axton, Virginia 24054.
